MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Metris

Introduced for the 2016 model year, this midsize van brought the European Vito to North America under a different market name and filled the gap between compact commercial vans and the full-size Sprinter. It was aimed at buyers who needed more cargo and passenger space than a smaller van could offer, but did not want to step up to the larger, heavier full-size segment. The vehicle arrived first as cargo and passenger configurations, giving commercial fleets, shuttle operators, and small businesses a practical rear-wheel-drive van option with a more car-like driving position than many traditional work vans.

The nameplate was part of the brand’s broader global van strategy, with North American examples assembled from kits in South Carolina. Over its run, the vehicle remained closely tied to the second-generation Vito/V-Class family and followed that platform’s evolution rather than developing into a separate U.S.-only model. In the United States, it served as the brand’s midsize commercial van offering and was positioned below the Sprinter in size and capability.

Production for this nameplate ended after the 2023 model year, making the North American run a single continuous period from 2016 through 2023.
