MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the EQS-Class Sedan

This all-electric luxury sedan marked Mercedes-Benz’s first series-produced battery-electric flagship in the traditional full-size executive-luxury class. It was revealed in 2021 and began production at the company’s Factory 56 in Sindelfingen, with Mercedes positioning it as the electric counterpart to the S-Class rather than a simple converted combustion model. The nameplate launched as part of the brand’s EQ electric family and introduced a dedicated EV architecture for luxury and executive-class cars, giving the model a distinct place in the modern Mercedes-Benz lineup.

The sedan’s arrival was significant because it brought a new design language, a highly streamlined body, and a technology-forward cabin centered on the MBUX Hyperscreen to a segment long associated with comfort, prestige, and long-distance refinement. From the outset, the model was presented as a statement vehicle for the brand’s electric future, combining top-end luxury with new battery-electric packaging and advanced digital systems. In 2022, Mercedes-Benz described it as the first all-electric luxury saloon from the brand, underscoring its role as the pioneer for later electric variants and related top-end EVs.

The model has remained in production and has continued to evolve through ongoing updates, including later model-year revisions and the addition of new technologies. Its story is therefore one of a single continuous production run, beginning with its 2022 model-year introduction and continuing as Mercedes-Benz’s flagship electric sedan.
