MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the CX-90

This large three-row crossover was unveiled by Mazda in early 2023 and launched in North America as a 2024 model, marking the brand’s entry into its newer “Large Product” family for bigger, more premium-oriented vehicles. It was positioned as Mazda’s flagship SUV for markets such as the United States and Canada, with an emphasis on space, refinement, and a more upscale driving character than the smaller crossovers that had formed the core of Mazda’s SUV range.

The nameplate belongs to a new era of Mazda utility vehicles rather than a long-running legacy badge. Its debut represented a major shift for the company, both in size and in market ambition, as Mazda expanded upward into the upper end of the three-row crossover segment. The model was introduced with electrified powertrain options from the start, reflecting Mazda’s broader strategy to combine efficiency with the brand’s traditional focus on driving feel.

As of now, the model remains in production and continues to be part of Mazda’s current lineup. Its history is still short, but it is notable as the first and largest member of Mazda’s modern large-SUV family in North America, and as one of the key vehicles defining the brand’s recent move toward more premium, rear-drive-based architecture and three-row family utility.
