Mazda’s rotary-powered sports coupe was introduced in 1978 as the Savanna RX-7, a lightweight front-midship car developed around driving enjoyment and balanced handling. It arrived as a more accessible alternative to Mazda’s earlier rotary sports cars, but quickly built its own identity through its compact packaging, pop-up headlights, and distinct rotary character. Over three generations, the nameplate evolved from the original FB/SA-era car to the more sharply styled second-generation model of 1985 and the highly regarded third-generation car launched in 1991, known in some markets as the FD. The final generation emphasized a purist sports-car formula with twin-turbo rotary power and a strong focus on chassis balance and responsiveness. The model gained a lasting enthusiast following for its unique engine layout, lightweight feel, and motorsport associations, helping define Mazda’s image as a maker of driver-focused sports cars. Mazda ended production in 2002 with the Spirit R final limited edition, closing a 24-year run for the nameplate.
