Lotus introduced this nameplate in 2000 as a harder-edged, track-focused derivative of the Elise. The car grew out of the Lotus Sport Elise race program created for the Autobytel Lotus Championship, and Lotus brought the road-going version to market at the opening round of that series. Its name comes from the French word “exiger,” reflecting the car’s demanding, driver-focused character. From the outset it was positioned as a compact, lightweight coupe with a strong motorsport connection rather than a conventional road sports car.
The first production run was brief. Lotus’ own heritage material notes that the original Series 1 car went out of production in 2002, making it a relatively rare early chapter in the model’s history. After a two-year absence, Lotus revived the name in 2004 with a second-generation car that continued the same basic mission but adopted the company’s newer styling direction and evolved engineering. Over time, the nameplate expanded into a family of more focused variants, including Cup and Final Edition derivatives, while remaining closely associated with Lotus’ purist, race-bred philosophy.
Lotus ended production of its Elise, Exige, and Evora sports cars during 2021, and the final Exige Final Edition marked the close of the model’s long second production period. Because the nameplate was discontinued and later revived, it is treated here as having multiple separate production periods rather than one continuous run.
