Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1995 and reaching production for the 1996 model year, this lightweight two-seat sports car became one of the defining modern Lotus nameplates. It was named for Elisa, the granddaughter of chairman Romano Artioli, and it was conceived as a return to the company’s core ideas of simplicity, low mass, and sharp driver involvement. The original car was notable for its bonded aluminum chassis and for showing that an advanced, small-volume sports car could be engineered around reduced weight rather than added complexity.
The first production series ran from 1996 through 2003 and established the car’s reputation as an accessible enthusiast machine with handling at the center of its appeal. A revised second generation arrived for the 2004 model year, bringing a new body design, updated chassis and suspension, and a broader range of variants. Lotus continued to evolve the line through the late 2000s and into the 2011 model-year refresh, which added further styling and powertrain changes while keeping the same basic lightweight formula intact.
The nameplate remained in continuous production until 2021, when Lotus marked the end of the run with Final Edition variants. Over its life, it became an icon of the modern lightweight sports car and one of the most recognizable road cars in Lotus history, admired for its purity, low-mass engineering, and strong connection to the brand’s traditional ethos.
