MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Town Car

The Town Car nameplate emerged as Lincoln’s own full-size luxury sedan in the 1981 model year, evolving out of the late-1970s Continental line. It quickly became the brand’s flagship, known for its traditional rear-wheel-drive American luxury formula and its association with quiet, formal, chauffeur-oriented transportation. The first generation ran through 1989, followed by a major redesign for 1990 that gave the car a more modern shape while preserving its large sedan character. A second major revision arrived for 1998, when the car adopted softer styling and continued to serve as Lincoln’s long-running luxury sedan in a market increasingly shifting toward SUVs. The nameplate remained in production through the 2011 model year, after which Lincoln ended the line without a revival.
