Kawasaki brought this nameplate back in 2003 as a modern liter-class naked bike, positioning it as a radical, performance-focused street machine rather than a retro throwback. The first-generation model marked a clear departure from the brand’s earlier air-cooled UJMs, using a contemporary chassis and aggressive styling to create what Kawasaki described as a new kind of “Supernaked.” That formula quickly became central to the model’s identity: upright ergonomics, strong midrange character, and a stripped-down look with more attitude than a conventional standard bike.
The bike was comprehensively updated over time rather than reinvented each year. A major redesign arrived for the 2010 model, bringing new bodywork, a new frame concept, and a more refined road-focused character. Kawasaki then pushed the styling language further in the 2014 generation with the company’s “sugomi” design theme, giving the machine a sharper, more muscular presence that became closely associated with the Z family. Later official Kawasaki materials show continued development for the European market, including revisions to meet emissions requirements and improve handling and rider feedback.
In Kawasaki’s lineup, this model sat near the top of the naturally aspirated Z family and helped define the modern supernaked class for the brand. It became one of Kawasaki’s most recognizable naked performance motorcycles of the 2000s and 2010s, valued by enthusiasts for its aggressive road manners, streetfighter image, and direct connection to the broader Z lineage.
