This large-displacement Kawasaki cruiser was introduced for the 1987 model year as part of the company’s early Vulcan family. It was marketed as a big V-twin cruiser for the North American market and quickly became one of the most recognizable members of Kawasaki’s first-generation cruiser lineup. Kawasaki’s own historical material describes the Vulcan line as a purpose-built cruiser family that began with the original Vulcan 750, and notes that the larger 1500cc machine joined the range for 1987. The nameplate was offered through the 1995 model year, marking the end of the original Vulcan 88 run.
The model is significant because it represented Kawasaki’s move into heavyweight cruiser territory with a dedicated, factory-designed platform rather than a repurposed standard-bike layout. That helped establish the Vulcan identity: long, low styling; a relaxed riding position; and a strong emphasis on smooth V-twin character.
