This compact two-door SUV was introduced for North America in 1989 as a more lifestyle-oriented off-road model, with a semi-convertible roof treatment that set it apart from the maker’s more traditional utility vehicles. It was closely related to the brand’s Japanese-market recreation vehicle and quickly became known for blending open-air appeal with honest truck-based durability. The original version ran through the mid-1990s, after which the nameplate disappeared for several years. It returned in 1998 on a redesigned, more rounded platform that shared family ties with the contemporary four-door SUV line. That second run kept the short-wheelbase, two-door formula and added a hardtop variant late in the run, helping it stay relevant as the small-SUV market evolved. For 2001, the same vehicle was renamed in North America and continued briefly under that new badge before ending production in 2003. Because the nameplate was used in two distinct periods separated by a gap, its history is best treated as a revived model rather than a single uninterrupted run.
