Introduced during Indian Motorcycle’s early-2000s revival, the Spirit was a middleweight cruiser positioned below the larger Chief line and aimed at riders who wanted a lighter, more approachable Indian without giving up the brand’s traditional styling cues. It arrived as part of the Gilroy-era Indian lineup and was sold in the 2001 through 2004 model years, making it one of the better-known motorcycles from that short-lived chapter in the company’s history.
The Spirit carried forward the look and feel that enthusiasts associated with the reborn brand: classic American cruiser proportions, swept-back styling, and a focus on boulevard riding rather than long-distance touring. Within the lineup, it sat alongside other Indian models of the period and was offered in multiple versions and equipment levels, including Standard and Deluxe, which helped it appeal to riders with different tastes and budgets.
Although the Spirit name returned for only a brief run, it has stayed notable among Indian fans because it represents the modern-era attempt to broaden the marque beyond heavyweight cruisers and re-establish a full model range after decades of interruption. Production ended when the pre-Polaris Indian operation closed, and the Spirit name did not carry over into the later Indian revival that began in 2011.
