MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Chieftain

Indian Motorcycle introduced this nameplate for the 2014 model year as one of the original motorcycles in its modern relaunch. It marked the brand’s entry into the full-size bagger/touring segment with a fork-mounted fairing, hard saddlebags, and a styling direction that mixed classic Indian cues with contemporary comfort and touring amenities. Early versions were powered by the Thunder Stroke V-twin and were positioned as a premium long-distance road bike within the revived lineup. Over time, the nameplate has remained a core part of Indian’s touring family and has been updated with new technology, comfort features, and revised powertrains, while keeping its recognizable bagger silhouette. The model has not had a known production gap, and it remains in production today.
