MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Chieftain Elite

Indian first introduced this Elite-badged Chieftain as a limited-production, ultra-premium version of its bagger for the 2018 model year, giving the standard Chieftain a more custom show-bike look straight from the factory. The original run was positioned as an exclusive flagship variant, with distinctive paint, brightwork, and other hand-finished touches that set it apart from the mainstream Chieftain family. After that early appearance, the nameplate disappeared for a short time, then returned for the 2020 model year as part of Indian’s revived Elite line. In its second life, it continued the same formula of limited availability and upscale detailing, appearing again in the early 2020s and carrying through at least the 2024 model year. The model was intended to deliver the classic full-size American touring-bagger profile with a more collectible, custom-inspired presentation than the regular Chieftain trims. Because Indian has reused the Elite badge on other flagship models, this nameplate is best understood as a recurring special-edition treatment rather than a separate long-running trim hierarchy. For enthusiasts, it stands out as one of the brand’s most overt factory-custom interpretations of the modern Chieftain platform, bridging the gap between showroom motorcycle and bespoke build.
