This Sportster-branded nameplate first appeared for the 1996 model year as Harley-Davidson’s 1200cc custom-oriented XL model, positioned as a more laid-back, style-forward version of the standard Sportster. Early examples were part of the original 1996–2006 production run, and Harley-Davidson’s own accessory fitment references identify XL1200C applications from 1996 through 2006. In 2004, the company gave the 883C and 1200C updated styling and performance changes as part of a broader Sportster refresh, reinforcing the model’s role as the dressier, more personalized member of the family. The first run ended after 2006.
The nameplate returned for the 2011 model year as a mid-year addition to the Sportster lineup, this time with a broader factory-customization theme. Harley-Davidson introduced the revived model alongside its H-D1 factory customization program, and official materials described it as a new 1200 Custom with a wide front end, chunky front tire, pull-back bars, and LED tail lamp. From that point forward, it served as one of the classic air-cooled 1200cc Sportsters, aimed at riders who wanted traditional Harley style with a lower, easygoing riding position and a strong custom look.
The second production period continued through the end of the traditional air-cooled Sportster era. Harley-Davidson’s 2020 materials still listed the 1200 Custom, while the company’s 2021 Sportster history marks the arrival of the Sportster S as a major departure from the long-running conventional Sportster formula. Taken together, that indicates the 1200 Custom’s final production run ended before the new-generation Sportster family arrived. Because the nameplate was discontinued and later revived, it has multiple production periods rather than one continuous run.
