MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the S7

Introduced for the 1986 model year, this front-engine forward-control school bus chassis was part of General Motors’ medium-duty truck lineup and was used as the foundation for full-size school bus bodies. It represented a continuation of GM’s long-running presence in the school-bus chassis market, but with a more modern forward-control layout aimed at improving packaging and serviceability for body builders and fleet buyers. Contemporary sales literature for the launch year highlights the chassis as a distinct school-bus offering rather than a conventional truck derivative, and period references show it being supported through the end of the 1991 model year. By 1991, GM’s medium-duty service publications still listed the chassis, but it disappeared afterward as GM’s school-bus chassis business shifted away from this configuration. Enthusiasts and bus historians remember it as one of the last GM front-engine school bus chassis lines and as a platform that helped power many late-1980s and early-1990s American school buses.
