F-550

Ford introduced the Super Duty family for the 1999 model year as a separate heavy-duty branch of the F-Series, created to serve customers who needed more capability than the light-duty trucks could offer. The F-550 nameplate arrived in that initial Super Duty era as the chassis-cab member of the lineup, aimed at commercial and upfit buyers who needed a stronger foundation for work applications such as service bodies, tow equipment, and specialty vocational builds. Unlike the pickup-focused F-250 and F-350 variants, the F-550 has been defined by its role as a medium- to heavy-duty work truck platform. Over time it has remained part of Ford’s Super Duty range through successive redesigns and updates, reflecting the model’s position as a staple of fleets, municipal use, and other demanding commercial jobs. It has not had a documented discontinuation and revival, and it continues in production today.
