This nameplate was introduced for the 1978 model year as part of Chrysler’s first wave of small front-wheel-drive cars, and it quickly became one of the company’s most important subcompact entries. It arrived as a practical, upright hatchback aimed at buyers who wanted economical transportation with a roomy interior and an American alternative to the import small-car boom. The early cars were closely associated with the shared Chrysler/Plymouth platform program, but the Dodge version established its own identity through trim, marketing, and later performance-focused variants. In 1979, the lineup expanded with the 024 coupe derivative, which gave the car a sportier image and helped broaden its appeal beyond basic commuter duty. Over time, the range became especially notable for performance offshoots such as the Shelby-tuned GLH models, which gave the little hatchback an outsized enthusiast reputation. Even so, the core model remained a value-oriented subcompact through its life. Production continued without a documented revival or second separate run, and the nameplate ended after the 1990 model year, closing a twelve-year run that made it a memorable part of Chrysler’s front-wheel-drive turnaround era.
