This nameplate was introduced for the 1980 model year as Dodge’s entry in the shrinking personal-luxury coupe segment of the early 1980s. It replaced the earlier Magnum coupe and rode on Chrysler’s J-body architecture, sharing its basic underpinnings with related corporate coupes of the period. The styling was intended to give Dodge a more upscale, sleeker image at a time when domestic automakers were responding to downsizing, changing buyer tastes, and tightening efficiency regulations.
The car was offered only as a two-door coupe and was aimed more at comfort, appearance, and highway cruising than at outright performance. Even so, it retained the rear-wheel-drive, V8-capable character that appealed to traditional Mopar buyers, and it became a notable transitional model for the brand. Special appearance and sport-oriented versions helped give the car some enthusiast appeal, while Chrysler’s racing interest briefly placed it in the NASCAR conversation and added to its period significance.
Production ran for four model years, ending after 1983. It did not return in a later revival, so this was a single continuous production period. Today the model is remembered as one of the better-known Chrysler J-body coupes and as a symbol of Dodge’s shift from the larger performance coupes of the 1970s toward the smaller, more efficiency-conscious cars of the 1980s.
