Introduced for the 1987 model year, this midsize pickup was created to split the difference between compact and full-size trucks at a time when that market space was still taking shape. Its original formula was simple but influential: a useful truck with more room, presence, and capability than the compact imports and domestic small pickups of the era, yet without the bulk of a traditional full-size rig. Over three generations, it evolved from a straightforward work truck into a broader-appeal midsize pickup with regular, extended, and crew-cab body styles, more refinement, and increasingly car-like comfort. Enthusiasts remember it for a number of notable factory and dealer-built performance and sport packages, including V8-powered variants that helped give the truck a distinct personality. The second generation arrived for the late 1990s and updated the platform with a more contemporary look and improved everyday usability, while the third generation, launched for 2005, moved the truck toward a more modern full-size-inspired design and made the model more competitive in a changing segment. Production ended after the 2011 model year, closing a 25-year run that made it one of the best-known American midsize pickup nameplates of its era.
