The Story of the Wolverine X2 850

The 850-badged two-seat Wolverine side-by-side arrived for the 2023 model year as an updated chapter in Yamaha’s compact Wolverine utility-adventure line. It built on the earlier Wolverine X2 formula, but the new naming highlighted the larger 847cc twin-cylinder powerplant and marked a fresh identity for the model family rather than a completely separate vehicle concept. From the start, it was positioned as a tight-trail, two-passenger machine aimed at riders who wanted a smaller footprint than the larger four-seat Wolverine variants, while still keeping the brand’s focus on durability, easy handling and broad recreational versatility.

This nameplate was introduced with a clear emphasis on refinement and trail manners. Yamaha used the model to bridge work and play, giving it a more premium personality than a basic utility rig while preserving the practical side-by-side layout that made the original Wolverine line popular. The 850 designation became the key identifier for the updated era, and the model continued in subsequent model years with trim-level variation rather than a break in production.

As of the latest official model information, the nameplate remains in production, so there is no confirmed final model year yet. The result is a relatively young but important chapter in the Wolverine lineage: a compact two-seat side-by-side that evolved from the original X2 into the larger-displacement 850 series and stayed focused on technical trails, recreational use and everyday utility.
