This small Japanese-market scooter was introduced in 1979 as the Carrot, with export versions marketed as the QT50. It occupied Yamaha’s playful, lightweight commuter niche rather than the larger scooter segment, and it became especially well known in export markets such as North America and Oceania for its compact size, simple automatic operation, and distinctive low-maintenance shaft-drive layout. The model used a 49cc single-cylinder two-stroke and was aimed at riders who wanted an easy, economical runabout for short urban trips and neighborhood use.
In the United States, the QT50 became one of the better-known “noped” era machines and earned a loyal following among enthusiasts for its unusual styling and durable mechanical character. It sat alongside other small-displacement Yamaha leisure and commuter models of the late 1970s and 1980s, but the QT50 stood out because it blended scooter convenience with a minimalist, almost toy-like appearance. Production continued through 1992, ending the original continuous run of the nameplate. Today it is remembered as a cult classic among vintage scooter and moped fans, with a reputation for simplicity, practicality, and character rather than outright performance.
