This sport-touring nameplate was introduced by Yamaha for the 2001 model year, debuting as a European-market flagship aimed at long-distance riding with a strong emphasis on high-speed stability, comfort, and all-day practicality. From the start, it was positioned as a “sports GT” rather than a traditional tourer, combining hard-edged road manners with the equipment and weather protection expected from a premium long-haul motorcycle. Yamaha later added the FJR1300A designation for ABS-equipped versions, and the lineup expanded again in 2006 with the FJR1300AS, a higher-spec model that brought clutchless shifting via Yamaha’s YCC-S system. Over the years the model was steadily refined with updates to touring comfort, electronics, and chassis equipment, including major revisions in the 2010s that kept it competitive in the large sport-touring class. Yamaha marked 20 years of the nameplate with a special anniversary edition for 2022 in Japan, underscoring the model’s long-running role as one of the company’s best-known flagship touring machines. The FJR1300 earned a reputation for dependable long-distance performance, refined inline-four power, and a balance of sportbike-like road feel with real touring capability.
