MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the XC40

Volvo’s XC40 is the brand’s compact SUV nameplate, introduced as a new addition to the lineup for the 2018 model year after its global unveiling in 2017. It marked Volvo’s entry into the premium small-SUV segment and was the first Volvo model built on the company’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), a platform that later underpinned other 40 Series vehicles. Volvo positioned it as a city-friendly, youthful alternative to the larger XC60 and XC90, with an emphasis on design, practicality, connectivity, and safety. The XC40 also helped define a new phase for Volvo’s business, serving as the first model offered through the company’s Care by Volvo subscription approach. It quickly became an important sales model for the brand and gained major recognition early in its life, including European Car of the Year honors for the 2018 award cycle. Over time, the XC40 line expanded to include electrified variants, but the core nameplate remained the compact premium SUV introduced in 2017 and sold from model year 2018 onward. It has remained in continuous production without a discontinuation or revival gap.
