MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Solterra

This all-electric Subaru nameplate was introduced in 2022 as the brand’s first global battery-electric vehicle and a major step in its electrification strategy. Developed jointly with Toyota, it was positioned as an SUV-sized BEV built around a dedicated electric platform while still aiming to feel like a Subaru, with emphasis on all-wheel-drive capability, everyday usability, and the brand’s traditional focus on confidence and stability.

The nameplate first emerged publicly in 2021, when Subaru announced the new model and said it would go on sale by the middle of 2022 in Japan, North America, Europe, China, and other markets. Subaru then launched the vehicle in 2022, making it the company’s first production EV offered globally. That timing makes 2022 the first model year for the nameplate.

Historically, the vehicle is significant because it marked Subaru’s move from hybrid and plug-in hybrid offerings into a dedicated mass-market BEV. It also reflected the company’s partnership with Toyota on shared electric-vehicle architecture, while still being marketed as a Subaru SUV rather than a rebadged Toyota product. Later updates have kept the nameplate in Subaru’s EV lineup, but the model remains part of the same continuous production run rather than a discontinued-and-revived badge.
