MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Fortwo

The smart fortwo is the German brand’s signature two-seat city car, a model that grew out of the earlier smart city-coupé and adopted the fortwo name in 2004. It was conceived as a radically compact urban runabout, built around smart’s trademark Tridion safety cell and a packaging philosophy that prioritized ease of parking, maneuverability and a surprisingly roomy cabin for such a small footprint. Over time, the fortwo became a recognizable design icon rather than just a niche commuter car, helped by a steady stream of special editions, BRABUS performance versions and a strong following in cities where ultra-compact dimensions mattered. The nameplate spanned three generations: the original 450-era car that established the concept, the larger and more refined 451-series fortwo that broadened its appeal, and the 453-series fortwo developed with Renault, which carried the model into its final years. The fortwo also became an important part of smart’s electrification story, evolving from early electric-drive test fleets into full production battery-electric variants. Production ended in March 2024 at the Hambach plant, with the last new cars delivered in July 2024, closing the book on one of Europe’s most distinctive modern city cars.
