Introduced in 1975, this executive saloon marked the return of a six-cylinder flagship to the brand’s range after the long gap since the prewar 601. It was positioned at the top of the lineup and aimed squarely at the European prestige-car class, with a formal, restrained look and a focus on comfort, long-distance refinement and diplomatic appeal. During the 1970s and early 1980s, it became closely associated with senior officials and company executives, especially in France and other parts of Europe.
Technically, the car is notable for helping establish Peugeot’s modern upper-luxury identity. It launched with a PRV V6 and later gained an important turbodiesel version, which made it one of the more technically interesting large French cars of its era. That diesel model was especially significant because it brought turbocharged diesel power to the European market early on, giving the range a broader appeal beyond the traditional petrol-powered flagship buyer.
Production continued through 1985, after which the nameplate was discontinued without an immediate successor. Although it never became a mass-market success, the car earned a lasting reputation as a distinctive French luxury sedan from the final years of the classic rear-wheel-drive era.
