Introduced for the 1997 model year, this midsize luxury SUV marked Mercury’s entry into the sport-utility market and was closely related to the contemporary Ford Explorer. It was positioned as the more upscale, comfort-oriented counterpart in the pair, aimed at buyers who wanted truck-based utility with a more premium look and feature set. The first version arrived with a distinct Mercury front end and trim treatment, while still sharing its underlying structure with the Explorer family.
Over its life, the nameplate went through three distinct design eras. The original 1997–2001 version used the older Explorer-based architecture and established the formula. A second-generation redesign for 2002 brought a new platform and a more modern independent-suspension layout, giving the vehicle a more carlike road feel and a clearer visual identity. A third and final redesign arrived for 2006, again alongside the Explorer, with updated styling and a more refined luxury emphasis.
Throughout the 2000s, the model evolved from a niche premium SUV into a mainstream family hauler, but it remained one of the brand’s signature trucks. It was discontinued after the 2010 model year as Ford prepared to retire Mercury itself, closing the book on one of the division’s most recognizable late-era nameplates.
