MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the GLS-Class

The GLS nameplate arrived for the 2016 model year as Mercedes-Benz renamed and updated its full-size luxury SUV line, previously sold as the GL-Class. The change aligned the vehicle with Mercedes-Benz’s naming convention and emphasized its role at the top of the brand’s SUV range. Since then, the GLS has served as the flagship three-row SUV, positioned as the brand’s large, comfort-focused alternative to the S-Class sedan. Across its generations, it has remained centered on a blend of luxury, space, and long-distance refinement rather than off-road specialization. In 2020, the model moved into its third generation, bringing a more modern interior and updated technology while continuing the same basic mission. The GLS has also spawned high-end derivatives such as Mercedes-Maybach and AMG versions, reinforcing its place as the marque’s premium full-size SUV.
