Introduced for the 2023 model year, this crossover marked Mazda’s first-ever CX-50 nameplate and was positioned as a more rugged, outdoors-oriented addition to the brand’s SUV lineup. Mazda unveiled it in late 2021 and began production in Alabama in January 2022, making it the first Mazda model built at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville. The CX-50 was developed for North American buyers who wanted Mazda’s usual on-road driving character in a package with a tougher stance, standard all-wheel-drive focus, and a stronger emphasis on weekend and light off-road use.
The nameplate has remained active since launch and has not gone through a known discontinuation and revival cycle. Over time, Mazda expanded the CX-50’s role beyond its original North American launch, including localized production for the Chinese market. Even so, the model’s identity has stayed consistent: a compact crossover positioned between Mazda’s smaller utility vehicles and its larger SUVs, with an emphasis on design, handling, and outdoor lifestyle appeal rather than hard-core off-road specialization.
