MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the CX-3

Mazda introduced this nameplate in late 2014 as a new compact crossover built around the company’s SKYACTIV technology and KODO design language, with global launches beginning in Japan in the spring of 2015. It arrived as part of Mazda’s new-generation lineup and was positioned as a small, style-focused crossover for urban use and everyday versatility, sitting below the brand’s larger crossovers in size and market focus. Over time, it became one of Mazda’s core SUV offerings, especially in markets where a subcompact crossover was a good fit.

The vehicle’s early life centered on a single continuous generation, but Mazda gradually evolved it through market-specific updates rather than a full redesign. Production began in Japan and then expanded to other plants as demand grew. The nameplate remained part of Mazda’s active product lineup in later company materials, with sales in Japan, North America and other markets listed as of Mazda’s 2025 company outline. The result is a long-running crossover nameplate that helped establish Mazda’s modern SUV identity and continued to coexist with newer crossovers that broadened the brand’s lineup.
