The GS was Lexus’s midsize rear-wheel-drive luxury sport sedan, introduced for the 1993 model year as the brand expanded beyond its original flagship LS and ES lineup. It was positioned as the more driver-focused Lexus sedan, blending a refined cabin with sharper handling and a more performance-oriented character than the brand’s comfort-first models. Across its life, the GS moved through four generations and evolved from a conventional luxury sedan into one of Lexus’s most enthusiast-recognized nameplates.
The early GS established the formula: smooth six-cylinder power, rear-wheel-drive balance, and a distinct identity within the Lexus range. Later generations broadened the model’s appeal with stronger V8 variants, all-wheel drive, and eventually hybrid power. The third generation, launched for the 2006 model year, was especially important because it introduced the GS 450h, which helped make the GS one of the most notable luxury hybrid sedans of its era. Lexus then redesigned the car again for the 2013 model year, giving it a more aggressive design and a larger role in the brand’s modern performance image.
In its final years, the GS line included mainstream luxury versions, hybrid offerings, and the high-performance GS F. Lexus ended GS production after the 2020 model year, closing a nearly three-decade run for a sedan that helped define the brand’s sport-luxury identity.
