This nameplate first appeared for the 1984 model year as the upscale full-size version of Jeep’s SJ Wagoneer. Jeep kept the big SJ in production under the Grand Wagoneer name through 1991, positioning it as a luxury-oriented SUV and closing out the era with the well-known Final Edition. The badge then returned briefly in 1993 on a rare Grand Wagoneer version of the Grand Cherokee ZJ, offered as a top-spec package with woodgrain trim that deliberately echoed the earlier full-size model.
After nearly three decades away, Jeep revived the nameplate for the 2022 model year as an all-new full-size flagship SUV. The modern Grand Wagoneer is a separate, contemporary interpretation of the original idea: a premium, three-row Jeep aimed at the upper end of the market, blending luxury appointments with the brand’s traditional capability image. Because the nameplate was discontinued and later brought back, it has more than one distinct production period.
