Introduced for the 1981 model year, this Isuzu SUV was the export-market nameplate for the company’s compact 4x4 that was known in Japan as the Bighorn. The early truck-based design launched the model into a growing off-road segment and established it as one of Isuzu’s best-known global passenger vehicles. In many markets it was sold as a practical, rugged utility vehicle rather than a luxury SUV, with an emphasis on durability, four-wheel-drive ability, and versatility.
The nameplate went through two major generations. The first ran through the 1980s and helped build the model’s reputation as a capable, compact off-roader. A complete redesign arrived for the 1992 model year, bringing a larger and more refined body, more comfort-oriented positioning, and a stronger role as Isuzu’s flagship SUV in export markets. That second generation carried the model through the early 2000s and broadened its appeal beyond traditional off-road buyers.
The vehicle was sold under a variety of market-specific badges and closely related names, but the Trooper identity became especially familiar in North America, Europe, and other export regions. It also gained an enthusiast following for its honest, body-on-frame character and long-distance durability. Production ended after the 2002 model year, closing the book on one of Isuzu’s most recognizable SUVs.
