MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Springfield Dark Horse

The Springfield Dark Horse was introduced for the 2018 model year as a blacked-out, darker-styled version of Indian Motorcycle’s Springfield touring platform. It was launched alongside the broader revival-era Springfield family and was positioned as a more custom-looking alternative to the classic chrome-heavy touring bikes in the lineup. From the start, it paired the Springfield’s traditional full-size American bagger silhouette with stripped-back finishes and a more aggressive presentation, giving riders a factory-built custom aesthetic rather than a heavily accessorized standard cruiser.

The nameplate sits within Indian’s modern Springfield range rather than representing an entirely separate touring architecture. In practice, the Dark Horse version emphasizes the same long-distance, full-fender, luggage-capable character associated with the Springfield, but with a darker visual identity that became part of Indian Motorcycle’s wider Dark Horse theme across several model lines. That made it especially appealing to riders who wanted touring comfort and classic American styling without the brightwork and more ornate look of the traditional trim.

The model has remained in production through the current lineup, so it should be understood as a continuing nameplate rather than a discontinued-and-revived motorcycle. Its history is therefore a single continuous production period beginning in 2018. Over that time, it has stayed focused on the same core idea: a premium, factory-custom touring motorcycle with heritage-inspired styling, modern road equipment, and a distinctly blacked-out appearance that separates it from the standard Springfield.
