It debuted at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and reached showrooms later that year, positioned as a roomy, versatile alternative to conventional MPVs and SUVs. Built in Toluca, Mexico, it was notable for being one of the first Fiat-branded models to emerge from the Fiat-Chrysler alliance. Over its life, the range was refreshed with special editions and updates, including the Freemont Cross in 2014, which gave the vehicle a more rugged appearance and kept the model competitive in the crossover market. The nameplate remained a single continuous run rather than a revived legacy model, and it was phased out after the 2016 model year.
