Shelby Charger

This performance hatchback was born from Dodge’s early-1980s front-wheel-drive L-body compact and Shelby American’s tuning program. The nameplate first appeared for the 1983 model year, when Shelby teamed with Dodge to create a sportier, more sharply handled version of the Charger hatchback. It was one of the first modern Dodge/Shelby collaborations and helped bring the Shelby name into a new era of smaller, fuel-conscious performance cars. Over time, the car evolved from the original naturally aspirated formula into more serious turbocharged variants, reflecting the period’s shift toward compact, boost-fed performance. The run ended with the 1987 model year, when the final batch of cars served as the basis for the limited GLH-S conversion, making 1987 the final chapter for the original nameplate.
