MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the 6500XD

Chevrolet added this nameplate to its cab-over commercial lineup for the 2023 model year, extending the Low Cab Forward series into a heavier-duty class above the 5500 XD. It was created for vocational buyers who need a compact cab-over truck with strong chassis capability, easy maneuverability in tight urban or job-site settings, and upfit-friendly body-on-frame architecture. From its introduction, the 6500 XD was positioned as a diesel-only work truck and paired with Chevrolet’s medium-duty commercial truck strategy rather than the brand’s pickup lineup.

The model is part of the modern Low Cab Forward family, which replaced Chevy’s earlier Japanese-market-based cab-over offerings in North America with a more integrated commercial-truck lineup. In practice, the 6500 XD serves fleets, municipalities, utilities, and specialty upfitters that need a straight-frame cab-over layout for cargo bodies, service bodies, stakes, and other vocational conversions. Chevrolet has kept the nameplate in regular production since launch, so there is no known end year to date. The badge remains a contemporary Chevrolet commercial designation rather than a long-running historic model, and its significance comes from filling the heavy-duty end of Chevrolet’s low-cab-forward range.
