The Story of the 3 ton

Chevrolet’s 3-ton heavy-duty truck series emerged in the mid-1960s as part of the brand’s expanded medium/heavy commercial lineup. In Chevrolet parts and service literature, the 3-ton Series 80000 is documented from the 1966 model year through 1973, alongside the related 2.5-ton and 3.5-ton Chevrolet heavy-duty truck series. This was a work-focused commercial chassis line rather than a consumer pickup, built for vocational duty such as hauling, dump bodies, service bodies and other fleet applications.

The 3-ton series sat above Chevrolet’s lighter pickup and medium-duty trucks and represented the brand’s push deeper into the heavy-commercial market during that era. By the early 1970s, Chevrolet’s heavy-duty truck families were being reorganized into broader series ranges, and the 3-ton Series 80000 no longer appears as a separate Chevrolet truck series after the 1973 model year. Enthusiasts and restorers most often encounter these trucks in fleet, municipal and vocational configurations rather than as standard pickups, and they are significant as part of Chevrolet’s transition from traditional cab-and-chassis commercial trucks into the later heavy-duty series structure.
