This nameplate debuted for the 2005 model year in North America as a replacement for Buick’s Century and Regal sedans, marking a fresh direction for the brand’s mainstream sedan lineup. The original car ran through the 2009 model year and established the badge as a key mid-size-to-near-full-size sedan in Buick’s U.S. and Canadian showrooms. A redesigned second generation arrived for 2010 with a more upscale, globalized character, followed by a third generation for 2017 that moved the car further upmarket and made it the brand’s flagship sedan in North America. Production for the North American market ended after the 2019 model year as GM shifted away from passenger cars there. Separately, the same nameplate also became an important China-market Buick sedan, launched there in 2006 and continuing through later updates, including a 2025 version announced by GM China. Because the nameplate has not had a clean, single ended production run worldwide, the safest history is to treat it as an ongoing model with a long North American chapter and a continuing Chinese chapter.
