Buell introduced this nameplate for the 2006 model year as part of its XB family, positioning it as an unconventional adventure-sport motorcycle rather than a conventional streetbike or dual-sport. The original version arrived as the XB12X, and it stood out for combining Buell’s trademark chassis ideas with a more upright riding position, longer suspension travel, and a focus on pavement-biased versatility. It was aimed at riders who wanted long-distance comfort and rough-road capability without giving up the sharp handling character associated with the brand.
Over the next few model years, the line evolved but remained centered on the same basic concept. For 2008 and 2009, Buell expanded the concept with the XB12XT, a more touring-oriented derivative that added greater road comfort and luggage-friendly practicality while keeping the same adventure-sport identity. By the 2010 model year, the nameplate was still present in Buell’s XB lineup, with both the XB12X and XB12XT appearing in factory documentation.
The model’s run ended with the shutdown of the original Buell brand under Harley-Davidson, making it one of the last and best-known examples of Buell’s distinctive XB-era design philosophy.
