This Buell Lightning CityX nameplate was introduced for the 2005 model year as an urban-oriented member of the XB family, using Buell’s compact sportbike architecture and a more upright, city-friendly setup than the standard Lightning variants. The CityX was positioned as a streetfighter with a tougher, more practical attitude, and it quickly became one of the most distinctive bikes in Buell’s lineup because of its exposed mechanical layout and aggressive styling cues.
The original CityX appeared as the XB9SX, which carried the 984cc version of Buell’s XB engine family. It shared the core XB chassis concept with other Buell models, including the fuel-in-frame and oil-in-swingarm layout, but differentiated itself with tall handlebars, handguards, and a rugged visual package meant to suggest urban versatility rather than pure track focus. In later model years, Buell expanded the concept with the XB12SX version, giving the CityX formula a larger-displacement engine while keeping the same basic streetfighter identity.
The Lightning CityX line ran through the end of Buell’s original production era and was part of the final 2010 model-year lineup before the brand’s original Harley-Davidson-era operations ended. For enthusiasts, the CityX remains one of the more recognizable XB-era Buells because it captured the brand’s unconventional engineering and left-field styling in a form that was aimed squarely at everyday street use.
