The Acura ZDX nameplate has two separate production periods built around very different vehicles. The original ZDX arrived for the 2010 model year after a prototype debuted at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. Acura positioned it as a premium four-door sports coupe that blended the elevated stance and utility of a crossover with a low, sweeping roofline. It was the first vehicle styled from beginning to end at Acura’s dedicated design studio in California, developing an exterior theme created by designer Michelle Christensen.
Produced in Alliston, Ontario, the first-generation ZDX shared its basic platform with the MDX but adopted a more dramatic five-door body with concealed rear-door handles, pronounced rear haunches and a panoramic glass roof. A V6 engine and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive reflected its position near the top of Acura’s range. Its unconventional proportions limited rear-seat and cargo practicality, but they also made the ZDX an early example of the coupe-like luxury crossover format that later became more common. Acura simplified and updated the model for 2013, then ended production after that final model year while refocusing its lineup on higher-volume products.
After a decade-long absence, the ZDX name returned for the 2024 model year on an unrelated all-electric SUV. This revival became Acura’s first production battery-electric vehicle. It was jointly developed with General Motors, using a GM-developed electric platform and battery system while receiving Acura-specific exterior and interior design, chassis tuning and branding. The lineup included the A-Spec, offered with rear- or all-wheel drive, and the dual-motor ZDX Type S, which extended Acura’s performance sub-brand into the electric era.
The electric ZDX was ultimately another short-lived chapter. Acura ended its production in September 2025 after offering it as a 2024 model, and it did not continue into a 2025 model year. Despite the brief runs of both versions, the ZDX remains historically notable for twice testing new territory for Acura: first with a boldly styled coupe-crossover and later as the brand’s inaugural electric vehicle.
